Novel Synthesis of Angels & Demons and Dover Beach

Both ‘Angels & Demons’ and ‘Dover Beach’ address the topic of the losing and loss of faith. ‘Angles & Demons’ directly discuss loss of faith in modern society where as ‘Dover Beach’ defines it as a metaphysical “sea of faith”. ‘Dover Beach’ discusses faith “like the folds of a bright girdle furled”, describing it like a blanket that surrounds and protects the earth. In stanza 3 Matthew Arnold states that this protection is retreating and bearing the “naked shingles of the world” to hash realities that it had saved us from. In contrast ‘Angels & Demons’ shows how people have lost faith and instead filled that void with science that has done nothing but create more questions and fuel rage. A prime example is Kohler, because when he was a child he was sick and his parents believed that god would save him and that science had no place in trying to change what he had done. When the doctor finally saved his life Kohler realized that god was not almighty and could and dose not save us. ‘Angels & Demons’ demonstrates that when faith is taken away people will question more and science can answer some of the questions , big bang, where we came from and how we were created, but it cannot answer all of them. It shows that science only creates more questions and doesn’t stop to think about or question what they are doing due to the nature of sciences' progression. Although both deal with loss of faith the portray it in different manners and by how the describe it.
